Hillside L.T.C. Newsletter June 2003

This year's league season is now well under way, with some mixed results :-
1st Team - won 1, lost 5 2nd Team - won 1, drawn 1, lost 4
3rd team - won 5, lost 1 4th Team - won 1, lost 5 ( one of which was conceded as we were
not able to field a team ).
We try to pick the teams in order of strength from 'healthy', available players. Unfortunately, work commitments and injuries can affect this so we have to call on people at the last minute - if you wish to be available, the full fixture list for all teams is on the notice board in the club house, and also on the web-site. We're very grateful to those who have stepped in at the last minute.

Cup matches - Well done to the 1st, 3rd, and 4th teams who are all through to the 2nd round of the various Cups.

Our 1st friendly match was on Sunday, 18th May against Hightown. Hillside won, and a tea was enjoyed by both teams. Thanks to John Pickup and David Cooper for organising this. If you are interested in playing, or have contacts in another club who would like to play competitive tennis on an informal basis, please contact David on 840186.

Club sessions continue on Sunday afternoons from 3pm, and Wednesday evenings from 7pm. All standards are welcome, and the more people who come down the more varied the tennis. On the 2nd Wed in each month we've started ordering food ( e.g. pizza ) to be delivered, and we enjoy this, and the chance to sit down together after the tennis.

American Tournaments are on the last week-end of each month, alternating Saturday or Sunday. The next one is on Saturday, 28th June

Club Tournaments: Entry lists are on the board now, so please add your name before 15th June. Remember Finals Day is on Saturday, 6th September.

Coaching - If you, or any of your family, are interested in having some coaching, either group or individual, David Cooper, 840186, is the best person to give you up to date details on this.

Junior Sessions are running well with Anne Howard, Karen and Sylvia Taylor, from 4.30 - 5.30 pm on Fridays. These sessions cost £1, and all youngsters (and their friends ) are welcome - no need to book, just turn up.

Forthcoming social events:
Saturday, 5th July Summer Party chez Pickup( 18, Shore Road ) or club house if wet. Details from Stuart Chorlton 211821. This promises to be a really good night of food and laughter - for only £6. Be there if you can.

Saturday, 15th November - Presentation Dinner at the Yacht club - £8 each - further details to follow, but be sure to book your tickets early (from any committee member)

Members' news:
It was with shock and great sadness that we learned of the sudden death of Tim Marsland last month. Tim had been a member of Hillside for many years and even met his wife at the club. As a coach he has helped many of our members, both young and not so young, to improve their game, and, just as important to believe in our own abilities. He was still coaching earlier this year, and will be greatly missed, both on the courts, and at our Finals Day and social events.

Congratulations and our best wishes are extended to
Vicky ( Taylor ), who is now Mrs McCaffrey, following her marriage to John.
Ruth, Paul and Dawn Halstead, after the birth of Fraser in April. (Paul apparently enjoys getting up for the 3am feed)
David Daniels who celebrates his 90th birthday this week.
